The city has long been known as a politically progressive one, with a rich history of social activism. It was one of the first cities in the union to free a large number of slaves, including the historical figure Frederick Douglass. It was Douglass who was instrumental in the publication of the then revolutionary newspaper, the North Star. Susan B.
